Develop and Implement a Plan


This written document will outline your business’ waste reduction steps and how they will be implemented. The complexity of the plan will depend on the size and type of business; a manufacturing facility’s plan may have more steps than a typical office’s because of the chemicals used in its processes.

Regardless of your business, the plan should include the following steps:

Once the BIO plan is developed for your site, you need to educate staff on the new programs. This should occur before the program starts so you can nip potential issues in the bud. All staff should receive program information in writing, and it should be incorporated into the employee handbook.

Staff should be updated on the program periodically, including how much waste has been reduced and positive efforts of specific individual/departments.

Conduct a Waste Assessment

A waste assessment (or waste audit) is a determination of the types and quantities of materials thrown away each day/week, and the alternative to disposal of those materials. It establishes a waste “benchmark” to use in setting up your waste reduction program. It is made up of three major steps:
